Group members

Add users and groups to a group, see who belongs to it directly or indirectly, and remove members.

On this page
  1. See the members of a group
  2. Add members
  3. Remove a member
  4. Changes are audited and can be sent to your systems

A group’s members can be users or other groups. Everyone who belongs to the group, directly or through a member group, gets the application access the group has.

See the members of a group

Open the group from the Groups list and select the Members tab. For each member, the list shows:

Column What it shows
Member The user or group. Select it to open its page.
Type User or Group.
Assignment Direct if the member was added to this group explicitly; Indirect if it belongs to this group through one of its member groups.

Use the Type filter to show only users or only groups, and check Show only direct associations to hide indirect members. Indirect members are explained in Nested groups.

To see the groups a particular person belongs to, open the user from Users and select the Groups tab. It uses the same Direct and Indirect labels.

Add members

  1. Open the group and select the Members tab.
  2. Select Add member.
  3. Choose whether to add Users or Groups, then search for and select one or more of them.
  4. Select Add.

The new members get the group’s application access immediately.

A few rules apply:

  • Users or groups, not both at once. To add both, add the users first, then open the dialog again for the groups.
  • No duplicates. A user or group that is already a direct member can’t be added again.
  • No service users. Service users represent integrations and can’t belong to groups.
  • No loops. A group can’t be added to itself, nor to one of its own member groups. See Nested groups.

Remove a member

  1. Open the group and select the Members tab.
  2. Next to a Direct member, select Remove member.
  3. Confirm with Remove.

You can also remove a person from a group on their own page: open the user, select the Groups tab and choose Remove from group.

Only direct members can be removed. An indirect member belongs to the group because of a member group; to remove it, remove it from that member group, or remove that member group. See Nested groups.

Important: a member who leaves a group loses the application access the group gave them, unless they have it in another way: assigned directly, or through another group. For a group being removed, the same applies to all its members.

Changes are audited and can be sent to your systems

Adding and removing members is recorded in your organization’s Audit Logs. If you use webhooks, the group_assignment.created and group_assignment.deleted events tell your systems when someone joins or leaves a group, including through nested groups.
